Who Needs Albania?

Deming says that management must drive out fear.  He does not talk much about how to do it.  Part of management’s job is to explain the company’s goals to the frontline workers.  If they are convinced, they will achieve greatness.  If not…, perhaps a different goal?

My friend, Chuck Lofy, was studying at Innsbruck after WWII and met some German ex-soldiers.  They often told him that the Italian army was useless.  "They couldn't even take Albania," they said.

When Chuck continued his studies at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome, he befriended some Italian ex-soldiers.  After a few drinks, he mentioned the opinions of the Germans.

The Italians were incredulous.  "Who needs Albania?" they shouted.  "We hid in trenches until the Germans came in.  Then they attacked and got killed.  Germany got Albania and we came home."

Fear can be overcome.  But the benefit must be perceived by those taking the risk.
